Wisdom comes out of surviving, reflecting on, and not repeating our mistakes. A book or video will never teach how quick a mistake can turn into an obituary. I am glad that Scott Redfern did not become a statistic.
Several blogers have remarked about the near death of a man kayaking during a small craft advisory in Puget Sound on March 16, 2009. Follow these links to the original video and the West Seattle Blog.

Mistakes: 1 – bad clothing choices for 42’ F water, 2 – did not check the weather report, 3 – no float plan, 4 – no spray skirt to prevent water from entering the cockpit, 5 – bad judgment in reading the water conditions, 6 – no training with bracing & rolling (granted he would have to had been wearing a spray skirt for either to work) 7 – never practiced a self rescue in four foot breaking swells, 8 – no signal flares to signal distress (lucky that a ferryboat say him).
He could have become a line in an obituary.
