As a professional expedition guide and certified kayak safety instructor, I’ve spent years leading people through Florida’s backwaters, mangrove tunnels, and coastal inlets. But some of the most meaningful work I’ve done has been as a volunteer with the Scouting America Sea Scout program right here in Tampa Bay.
This isn’t just about teaching young people how to paddle, sail, scuba dive, fish, or tie knots—though those skills are part of it. It’s about building leadership, resilience, teamwork, and most importantly, a deep respect for our waterways and marine environments.
Tampa Bay is a living classroom. From its thriving estuaries to the open Gulf, it offers an ideal backdrop for youth to explore and learn. Sea Scouts get hands-on with sailing, kayaking, navigation, marine safety, and conservation. But what they really gain is confidence and character. They learn what it means to be responsible for a crew, to make smart decisions on the water, and to work together under real-world conditions.
In a world increasingly disconnected from nature, Sea Scouts is a chance to reconnect—through adventure, stewardship, and service. I’ve seen shy kids become capable leaders and unsure youth grow into mentors for others. The transformation is incredible.
If you’re in the Tampa Bay area and know a teen who could use some direction, challenge, or just the adventure of a lifetime, Sea Scouts might just be the compass they need.
