Thanksgiving Weekend Kayaking in Pinellas County: Launches, Closures, and Planning

Thanksgiving weekend paddling in Pinellas County begins with checking the launch, not loading the car. Most county parks close the day after Thanksgiving, but Fort De Soto is an exception. City parks have their own rules. A place that appears on a paddling map may still have a gate, a damaged ramp, or a temporary closure.

Access sources checked October 31, 2026. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, in 2026; the Friday closure falls on November 27. Recheck the linked managing agencies before departure. Posted schedules do not guarantee that an individual ramp, trail, rental concession, or facility is operating.

Fort De Soto ParkPinellas County. The county lists Fort De Soto as open year round, unlike the usual Friday holiday closure.Check the current park page and closure notices, your intended launch, gate times, parking, and any rental arrangements. Choose water that fits the group.
Weedon Island PreservePinellas County. The preserve’s official information lists closure the day after Thanksgiving and December 25.Do not plan a Friday launch through the preserve. Preserve access and the Cultural and Natural History Center have different hours.
Cooper’s Bayou ParkCity of Clearwater. County holiday rules do not establish city park access. The city’s page displays a kayak ramp renovation closure notice.Obtain current confirmation from the city before relying on the ramp. An estimated construction duration is not proof that it reopened.

Choose the water after choosing the people

An open park is not a promise of suitable paddling conditions. For a visiting family or developing paddlers, look for a short outing with an easy return, a manageable launch and landing, and conditions within everyone’s abilities. Wind, tide, current, water temperature, and the forecast matter more than the holiday calendar.

A short protected shoreline outing and an open water crossing are different plans. At Fort De Soto, identify your actual launch and intended water rather than treating the whole park as one beginner route. At Weedon Island, use the official paddling information and account for tide and daylight before entering a trail.

The holiday departure check

Confirm the exact launch is open on your date and that you can return before closing. Check the forecast, wind, tides, and water conditions. Confirm parking, equipment, and any reservation separately. Leave a float plan with someone ashore. Wear properly fitted life jackets and carry the communication, rescue, and signaling equipment appropriate to the trip.

Keep the turnaround time clear. Dinner reservations do not make a headwind smaller, and nobody enjoys discovering that the designated driver is still two creeks away.

A meal and a little room to notice

Bring a simple snack and drinking water for the paddle. Save cooking for a place where it is permitted and practical; a public launch is not automatically a cooking area. Our Thanksgiving camp dinner for two suits a separate meal stop with an appropriate stove setup.
