There is a lot that hiking and kayaking have in common. Both activities attract the same type of people. We are people who enjoy being outside.
Beyond the desire of getting away from the stress and congestion of the asphalt jungle there are some gear similarities. We suit up in specialized gear. The gear can be inexpensive or pricey. It does not matter what it looks like. We are not setting out to set a new trend in fashion. But we do feel a part of a unique group when we meet a fellow naturalist who asks about a piece of kit that we are using.
Everyone can get outside and do what we do. But so few people choose to leave their comfortable couches to experience only what they are trying to vicariously live by watching the television. We can hike or paddle as easy or as difficult as we want. We can go out for the day to see the wildlife. Or we can go out for several days and return refreshed and sore.
The only difference is the way we travel on the natural trail. The journey is the same in hiking boots or in a kayak. And the rewards will always outweigh staying indoors. In the months to come I will be adding a feature section on day hikes. I hope the future posts help my fellow paddlers discover what else is out there. – Jeff

I love kayaking!
